From January 1 through September 25, parents and students of Beech Elementary joined together for the Beech Recycles Can Roundup. Kids brought cans to the school on Can Day each week. Community members dropped off theirs. Local businesses saved their cans for weekly or monthly collection by students and their parents—and are still saving them. Parents and grandparents brought the cans to the recycling center.
The project’s Recycling Coordinator asked local businesses to donate incentive awards for students who brought in cans to recycle. On Can Day, every student who recycled received some type of reward. Big ticket items such as stereos, CDs, and movie passes were given away to the top recyclers each month.
The school—home to about 600 students—raised $4,573.82 for the purchase of library books, computer equipment, a portable sound system, and seating for the new outdoor classroom. The Beech Recycles Can Roundup was such a success that they school continues to collect cans each month!
